If he doesn’t have name value yet, then the owners of those businesses haven’t been doing a great job at talking about their own stores whenever a customer came in and inquired about things. His name should’ve been dropped a ton already.
He should’ve also had large stills of the cafés displayed on the walls, and a flip album full of café photos should’ve been displayed on a custom table in front of those, so people could look through and see his other works that are far too big to display there. That, alone, would’ve shown that his works have already been recognized around the city and would’ve launched sales for him. This was just bad self marketing😅. On that point, with how detail oriented he was displaying everything properly in those shops, I really can’see him not knowing how to showcase his art properly🫤.
at the scale of a city a couple of shops may not mean a lot, also, the art wold is a secluded space, usually the legitimation you need to obtain can only be granted by galleries, I have seen a lot of people who do well selling at restaurants or hotel lobbies being belittled by art world people.
